Dear Valued Customer,

We know that protecting your identity and using the internet safely are both very important concerns for you.

The most prevalent threat to your personal information on the internet today is a Bot! A Bot, also referred to as malicious software or malware, is used to gain control of your computer, typically without your knowledge. Online criminals can use Bots to collect your Social Security numbers, bank account information, and/or credit card numbers by monitoring your keystrokes.

Constant Guard is a service provided to you at no additional charge as part of your Comcast High Speed Internet subscription. As a new feature of the Constant Guard™ service, if we believe one or more of your computers may be infected with a Bot, we may present to you in your browser a Comcast Service Notice (see example below). The notice will encourage you to take immediate action by visiting https://constantguard.comcast.net for self help instructions or professional assistance.

Don’t be fooled by faked virus alerts, along with the Comcast Service Notice, we will also send a Bot Notification email alert to your Comcast primary email address. This alert will be marked with the Comcast brand below (see below). The brand symbol indicates the email is “verified” to be safe by Comcast.

Ensuring your online safety and security is our top priority. While we hope you do not encounter a BOT on your computer, we want you to be rest assured that we will help you detect and remove it. For more information on the Constant Guard program, and how Comcast is protecting you online, please visit http://xfinity.com/constantguard.

Sincerely,

Comcast Customer Security Assurance

On one of my service calls i received due to a hot case bottom and noisy fan on a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ. After initial inspection it was determined that a wall of dust had accumulated in front of the exhaust heat-sink vents about 1/4 inch thick causing the fan to be overworked and shorting the life expectancy of the fan (rattling noise ie: shot bearings) and blocking the flow of air trying to get through that wall of dust to cool down the processor properly. Once replaced with a new fan and cleaning out the copper air vents everything was back to normal, proper cooling now the laptop is only getting warm (normal) instead of blistering hot and the fan is now emitting the proper fan decibel sound for normal everyday use. which comes to my Tech Tip: laptops are more prone to the accumulation of dust just due the nature of the machine meaning its portable and probably sees more mobile action, that being said as i tell my clients that the fan in a laptop should be treated as if it were any normal house ceiling fan that runs on a normal basis that when they clean the house don’t they clean the fan blades edges on a normal basis due to the accumulation of dust on it? the reply is almost 100% yes, well then the same applies to all electronic equipment with moving fans to help cool them down ( ie: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, nintendo, DVR, VCR, DVD Player, Amp, Receiver) all you need is a $4 can of electronic duster or canned air almost found at any electronic store. Just blow out or in to vents of the heat-sink from left to right every other month and presto no more cooling issues or units getting hot, running smoother, and you will definitely prolong that electronic equipment from either catastrophic shutdown failure or a visit from me and a bill.

One of my service calls today entailed just cleaning up the system and making his old desktop pc last a bit longer for a new job the EU has acquired. so i did notice several things upon just glancing at his over populated desktop is that he had two anti-virus programs running in the background (background i know….. means starts when first booting up) so then i noticed it was the free McAfee anti-virus program offered for free to all Comcast DSL subscribers here a while ago and AVG 8.5 Free version also installed. mmm, talk about OCD for internet protection. yikes. i don’t blame the guy though in today’s world you can never be safe enough but in this case is poses a reverse action or conflict between the two and to say the least use twice as much memory just keeping the two running simultaneously. Last but not least Comcast no longer supports the McAfee Anti-virus or should i say McAfee will no longer work (updates) if it is a Comcast version. So we uninstalled both anti-virus programs and installed the new Norton anti-virus program that is free and only available to Comcast subscribers and now everything is fine. I do have to comment on Norton Latest version, this free version is worth the install and could save you upwards around $160 or so, well it did me and it really isnt that bad, small footprint, easy install, quicker updates even a backup solution. oh get this as a comcast subscriber you have waiting for you is 10Gb free online backup service for free.
